UAE National Day 2026: a planning guide for companies (dates, flag rules and gift ideas)

This year the UAE marks its 55th National Day, and for most companies the planning starts a month earlier, on Flag Day. This guide puts the dates, the rules for using the flag and the Eid Al Etihad logo, and a simple planning timeline in one place, so your office celebration is on time and gets the details right.

The short answer

Flag Day
Tuesday 3 November, flags raised at 11am. A normal working day.
National Day holiday
Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 December, public and private sector.
Office celebrations
Usually in the days before the holiday, so plan for late November.
Flag rules
No logos or symbols on the flag, no changing its shape, no disposable items.
Official logo
Follow the annual Eid Al Etihad brand guidelines, or use the flag colours instead.
Order branded items by
15 November, so they arrive about 10 days early.

What are the key dates for National Day 2026?

Two dates matter, a month apart:

  • Flag Day, Tuesday 3 November. Government entities, schools, offices and organisations raise the flag together at 11am. It is not a public holiday, so it is a working day, according to Gulf News.
  • National Day, Wednesday 2 December. The UAE flag was first raised on 2 December 1971. The public holiday covers Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 December, for both the public and the private sector, under the official public holidays list (Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024).

Because the holiday starts on a Wednesday, most office celebrations will happen on Monday 30 November or Tuesday 1 December, or the week before. Plan backwards from that date, not from 2 December.

How far ahead should you plan?

About four weeks. A simple timeline that works for most offices:

  1. By 3 November (Flag Day): raise the flag at 11am and agree who is organising the National Day celebration.
  2. By 10 November: fix the date of the office event, the headcount and the budget per person.
  3. By 15 November: order anything printed or branded with your logo. Custom items need a design approval round as well as production time.
  4. Around 20 November: have everything in hand. That leaves 10 days of buffer for late changes, new joiners and deliveries to other branches.
  5. Week of 23 November: share the plan with staff, including any dress code.

The most common mistake is ordering in the last week of November, when suppliers are at their busiest with the same occasion.

What are the rules for using the UAE flag?

The flag must always be treated with respect, and there are clear dos and don'ts. The ones that matter most for companies, from the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs guidelines reported by Gulf News and the hoisting rules reported by Khaleej Times:

  • Do not put any logo, emblem or symbol on the flag.
  • Do not change its proportions or shape to fit something else, such as a balloon, a word or a logo.
  • Do not use the flag as a trademark, for advertising or for publicity.
  • Do not print it on disposable items such as napkins, boxes or pillows, or on food such as cakes and sweets.
  • Do not use it to cover buildings, vehicles or furniture, or as decoration or costume.
  • When you raise it, keep it clean, ironed and off the ground, and replace a flag that is faded or torn.

This is not only etiquette. Insulting the flag is a crime under Federal Decree-Law No. 13 of 2019, with heavy penalties.

What this means for branded items: keep your logo and the flag separate. A mug in the flag colours with your logo is fine. Your logo printed inside the flag is not. A pin that shows the flag on its own, or the flag beside your logo, respects the rule; a flag reshaped into your logo does not.

How can a company mark National Day at work?

A meaningful celebration does not need a big budget. Ideas that work in most offices:

  • Raise the flag together on Flag Day at 11am, even if it is a small desk flag in a meeting room.
  • A traditional dress day before the holiday, with Emirati colleagues invited to share what the day means to them.
  • Arabic coffee and dates for the team, served the traditional way.
  • A flag pin for everyone, handed out on the morning of the celebration. It is the simplest way to bring the whole team in.
  • A thank-you to clients: a short message or a small, useful gift that arrives before the holiday, not after it.

What makes a good National Day gift?

Something people use after 2 December. A gift that ends up in a drawer does nothing for the person or for your brand. Three questions help:

  • Will it be used every day? Bottles, tumblers, mugs, pens and notebooks stay on a desk all year.
  • Does it respect the flag rules? Use the flag colours and your own design. Avoid printing the flag itself on throwaway packaging.
  • Will the branding last? If it goes through a dishwasher, choose screen printing or laser engraving. Our guide to screen printing, UV printing and laser engraving explains which method suits which item.

For pins worn on uniforms, abayas or kanduras, a magnetic back is kinder to the fabric than a pin, because it leaves no holes.
